Caring for a loved one with Alzheimer's.

When someone you care about is diagnosed with Alzheimer's, the diagnosis alone can be overwhelming.  In the months and years following the diagnosis, the decisions that have to be made involving care for this loved one are even more daunting.

Naturally you want to continue to care for your loved one in the home as long as possible. However, taking on the role of caregiver for that loved one, even part-time, can have a major impact on family life.  As their illness progresses, providing a safe and loving home becomes increasingly more difficult.

The decision to move your loved one to a care community is a very emotional and difficult one to make.  When is the right time to move your loved one into a community?  Consider these questions:

  • Do you feel confident that your loved one is safe at all times in their current living situation?
  • Do you worry that they might hurt themselves if left alone?
  • Do you get concerned that they might wander off and not find their way home?
  • Can you consistently provide the social stimulation (activities) that your loved one needs?
  • How is their illness affecting your health and ability to care for them?
  • How is their illness impacting your family?
  • Do you frequently get frustrated and angry caring for your loved one?

As you are thinking about your answers to these questions, it is important to remember that there is a quality of life issue for you as well as your loved one.  If you cannot take care of your own health and it starts to decline, then you will not be able to be a caregiver at all.  At some point you may decide that you need assistance with the care giving.

That’s where A Golden Home Life can help.  We search for a care-giving partner for you.  Someone who can help improve the health, safety and well being of your loved one and clear a path for you to maintain a positive relationship with all of your family members.  As you’re going through this, remember that many other families are going through the same challenges and emotions that you are, and can be an excellent resource for you.  Click on this link for the www.xxxxxxxxx for information about an Alzheimer’s support group in your area.

The path of Alzheimer’s is wrought with worry, but don’t wait until a crisis occurs to consider your options.  Start your search early so you can make a well-informed decision when the time comes.  Many new communities that specialize in Alzheimer's care have been developed in the past few years and there are increasingly more options for families.  A Golden Home Life is here to help families make informed decisions for their loved ones.  Let us help you reduce the time and stress of choosing a new home and a partner in the care of your loved one.
